Natural and organic, they might sound the same, but actually, they are very different. This concept not only goes with beauty products we use but also for foods that we eat!
Natural Products
For a product to be considered natural, it is normally assumed as ingredients that come from nature instead of being man-made (synthetically created). The idea of nature can also derive from synthetic chemicals that are made from natural ingredients (one good example would be vitamins!).
We also need to keep note that synthetic chemicals do not equate to being harmful.
However, natural products are not certified under regulations. This basically means that natural products are usually produced on the company’s own basis and regulations. It can be produced from man-made natural ingredients, plants, minerals and so on, depending on the company’s brand.
However, we should also be aware that due to the hole in regulations, a product that contains little natural ingredients, can also call themselves ‘natural’, which we’ll need to manually read through the ingredient list to make sure whether the brand is ok (which I’ll do this for you).
Organic Products
Organic products, on the other hand, needs to go through levels of regulations to become what they are now. The ingredients need to be derived without the use of any man-made procedures (Genetically modified organisms, growth hormones, cloning, artificial colors and much much more.)
Through all of these complicated regulations, should a product finally been certified as ‘organic’!
One example would be under the USDA regulations that approve organic products with a USDA certified organic label. The certificate also often determines the percentage of the products of being organic too. However, it must be 70% above to be called organic!
Then, can vegan products be organic?
First, we need to understand what is vegan products. Vegan products are non-animal contained products, which are also cruelty-free products.
A harmful chemical contained product can also not test on or contain animals and call themselves cruelty-free. Sometime, the concept of being vegan and organic may also overlap. As for cruelty-free organic product is in my eyes, the highest level of vegan.
So, does this mean organic products are better than natural products?
This really depends on your personal preference, there are both up and downsides to them.
Organic products can be much safer, but it can be expensive to consume and hard to find in the market.
Natural products are much cheaper and easier to find in the market. However, it can also be tricky as any products can just contain little natural ingredients and call themselves natural! This won’t be a big problem to just manually read through the ingredients to make sure it is actually natural!
Or, the best way is, you can just keep updated, and let me test proof which one suits you better!
